These birds are riding the thermals over the local McDonald's parking lot. They do this EVERY MORNING. I'm guessing the kitchen throws out a good deal of heat, because there's nary a wing flapping in that flock.

Glanced at the preview image and initially wondered what sort of Dark Tower-like monolith was dominating the local retail district.
That’s the Pillars of the Umbrellanath.
They go where the updrafts are. If the parking lot is the biggest patch of pavement around, then it probably reflects enough heat to cause an updraft. I understand that the energy cost of soaring, for them, is negligible.
