CITADEL release day

It’s August 10th somehow already. That means CITADEL, book 3 in the Palladium Wars, is out today!

This is the book I wrote while the pandemic took off last year, and it was the toughest one to write of all the novels I have written because it turns out that tuning out the world and focusing on a fictional universe is super hard when the actual world is seemingly falling apart all around you. But I really like the way it turned out, and I think it’s the best one in the series yet. I certainly can’t tell now which writing days were good and which ones had me feel like Conan on the Wheel of Pain.

Anyway, I hope you buy it, and if you do, I really hope you enjoy it.

Release date for CITADEL

There’s a new release date for CITADEL, the third book in the Palladium Wars series. It will be released in all the usual formats on August 10.

Last year, I was on a two-novels-a-year pace, but then 2020 happened and it all went to hell. But this year has been absolutely fine for me so far as far as writing goes–the blanket of cortisol has lifted, and I am confident I’ll be able to get back to that pace this year and write two novels before the end of 2021. With the time needed for production, however, that means the next Frontlines novel will most likely not be out until early next year. I do intend to release a Frontlines novella or two in the meantime, however, so 2021 won’t be totally Frontlines-free.

CITADEL will be my tenth published novel. That’s not a terrible pace considering the first two only came out in 2013. (I had written TERMS OF ENLISTMENT already, of course, and I was halfway done with LINES OF DEPARTURE already, so it’s really more like eight and a half novels in eight years.) I don’t know if that makes me “prolific”–I certainly feel like a lazy bum compared to writers like Brandon Sanderson–but I am happy with my ability to turn out steady work, and I’ll be happier still when I can get out two books a year instead of just one.

ORDERS OF BATTLE release day

 

Today is the day! After almost two years, there’s a new Frontlines novel out. ORDERS OF BATTLE is the seventh volume in the series and picks up a few years after the last book. Things have calmed down a bit for humanity after POINTS OF IMPACT, but the Lankies are still out there, and someone higher up in the chain of command has decided that now’s the time to go looking for them.

ORDERS OF BATTLE is available on the Kindle and in paperback form today. (The Audible audiobook will be delayed until February–see my previous post on that for details.) I hope you pick it up in whichever format you prefer, then read it and maybe leave a review or recommend it to friends. And most importantly, I hope you enjoy returning to the Frontlines universe with Andrew Grayson and his podhead comrades.

I was on the shortlist for the Dragon Award in the military SF category, but alas–I didn’t win. That honor went to Savage Wars by Jason Anspach and Nick Cole, so congratulations to them. (Congratulations also to my friend John Scalzi, who won the Dragon Award for Best SF Novel with The Last Emperox.)

I’m still at work on CITADEL while trying to stay on top of the rest of my commitments and keeping my head above water. 2020 sure turned out to be a peach of a year.(I want to apologize to 2016 for having called it the WORST YEAR EVER. Sorry, 2016…I was young and naive.)

Berlin is never Berlin

Tor.com has a new Wild Cards story out today, written by me.

It’s called “Berlin Is Never Berlin”, and it features Khan, my joker-ace character who is half Bengal tiger and 100% bad-ass. (Khan was my point of view character in “Stripes”, my contribution to our Wild Cards novel LOW CHICAGO.)

In this story, Khan takes a bodyguard assignment for a bunch of spoiled rich kids who want to go clubbing and socializing in Europe. Spoiler: it doesn’t turn out to be the milk run he expected.

The title comes from a saying about Berlin: “Paris is always Paris, but Berlin is never Berlin.” It refers to the ever-changing face of the city, which seems to be in constant flux.

I had a lot of fun writing that story, and I hope you’ll enjoy reading it. As with all stories on Tor.com, it’s free to read.

Release date for Frontlines #7

Pub date change for BALLISTIC

I’ve been informed that BALLISTIC, second novel of the Palladium Wars series, has been moved up in the schedule for a publication date of May 26, 2020.

If you’d like to pre-order it, you can do so via this link. BALLISTIC will be available in paperback, hardcover, Kindle, and Audible formats. (Lots of pre-orders will make my publisher happy, which means an increased chance there will be more Frontlines and Palladium Wars novels past 2020. Just sayin’.)
