The first season of Love, Death & Robots, the new animated anthology put together by Tim Miller and David Fincher, kicked off on Netflix today.

Two of the episodic shorts in that project are based on stories I wrote. The first is an adaptation of the Frontlines short story “Lucky Thirteen”. It stars Samira Wiley (of “Orange Is The New Black” fame) as the lead character. The second is called “Shape-Shifters”, and it’s based on “On The Use Of Shape-Shifters In Warfare”, my Lycanthrope Soldiers In Afghanistan short story.
I’m super pleased with the way both of those turned out, but the other stories are also clean hits out of the park. Several are adaptations of stories by Alastair Reynolds and John Scalzi, so I am in pretty good company. And hey–maybe I get an IMDB entry now.
If you want to check it out, here’s the official Netflix page.
(“Shape-Shifters” is episode 10; “Lucky 13” is episode 13. And fair content warning for “Shape-Shifters”…it’s rather a lot more gory than Lucky 13. And the whole series is decidedly NSFW and adult-oriented, so don’t watch it with the Sesame Street demographic.)
Please, Please, Please, if you feel inspiration strike, create a novel (or a series of novels) based on shape-shifters, would love to see/read more about Decker! Amazing work!
Really good. Yours and Scalzis.
Congrats and well done Marko! I had read Lucky 13 years ago and loved it!! Will have to do the same with the werewolves now – didn’t know it was out there. I thought the Animators and Netflix studio did it very well. I binged watched all the episodes this weekend and thought your stuff and Scalzi’s were fantastically well done. Blur Studios as always delivers great animation. As you’re one of my favorite writers, I’m very glad to know that the high quality of your writing is getting the recognition it deserves. I hope this anthology series continues on Netflix and kudos to them on making this kind of content. If they do, I hope more of your material is used.
Shape-shifters was by far my favorite. Lucky 13 was the runner up. What a surprise to see they share their origins. I would pay cold hard cash for more episodes of shape-shifters. So much potential there. Haven’t enjoyed anything on tv this much in a while so thank you.
Liked both stories quite a bit. I thought I recognized Samira Wiley, too.
“Shape-Shifters” is hands down my favorite episode! Just had to hunt down the author of the short story it’s based on. Incredible potential in a book series (speaking as an urban fantasy author myself). Fantastic work! All the best to what’s ahead.
Lucky 13 had me tearing up even knowing what comes. Congrats.
I really enjoyed the shapeshifter story but only issue with that is why use the Marines of all branches hell we are called devil dogs they would have been idolized in the corps lol
Oh man, when I saw “Lucky 13” I had a super jazzed “No wayyyy!’ moment as I realized it was based on your work. Loved it and thought it was a great adaptation of your story. It also legitimately took me a moment to realize the actors were animated.
Anyways, enough fanboy gushing. Always enjoy your work.
I found you from ShapeShifters episode and want to ask that do you ever heard or read or played World of Darkness RPG named Werewolf the Apocalypse?
Never played it, but I’ve heard of it.
Congratulations!
Watched yours first and then a few others. Computer animation sure has climbed a long way up toward the rim of the uncanny valley.
Thank you, and I agree–the animation quality is stounding, particularly in Lucky 13 (which was done by Sony Imageworks). It really looks like live-action.
Was the lycanthrope story ever published? The only references I can find lead back here.
No, it’s an unpublished story, originally titled “On The Use Of Shape-Shifters In Warfare”. It was supposed to be backstory for the main character in an Urban Fantasy series I was thinking up. Now that the Netflix show is up, I may release the story on my own.
I loved the ‘Shape-shifters’ short so much I had to find out who did it, and lo, it was one of my fav authors!! I really hope you release the original work, there is a serious shortage of non-horror shifters in the world. And almost no well written ones.
I just released it today: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PR7KKP8
I just finished watching Shifters and saw your name, I also just relistened through Terms of Enlistment. H O L Y Shit that was an amazing adapt, I’d devour a series with that kind of character. Incredible work and thanks for sharing with the rest of us.
Thank you for making it available! I just grabbed it from Amazon. LOVED the ep, can’t wait to read the story!
Loved it – make this a series
Agreed – please, Mr. Kloos, consider writing more of this. I loved it.
Both stories were amazing. Congrats from a guy from Chile. You just went global, man. Gonna read everything you got. Good job. If you ever drop by Chile, drop a line.
Thanks, and I’ll let you know if I ever make it down there.
Both episodes were incredible!
Glad you enjoyed them!
Congratulations. I didn’t know about it but when Lucky Thirteen started on my screen I was like: “Wait a minute, I know that story!”. I hope that I will see more adaptations of your stories in future.
Yeah, when Lucky 13 started I went “Wait a minute… I know this story!” I thought that was a really good adaptation, too; in my opinion, one of the best episodes in the series.
Congratulations Marko. I’ve lurked on your blog since you moved up north years ago. I’ve read your books and now I see your name on the credits for a couple of episodes of a new Netflix series. That’s badass man. I remember when things were slow and you were just getting started. Looks like you might be going bigtime at last. I wish you the best. I hope your family and army of Dachshunds are all well. Have a great day man.
Thank you!
Holy crap, congratulations! I was looking forward to seeing the show before, but now that I know you have a couple stories in there it’s going to get watched asap.
